Hidden Talents

Talents were discovered at Alpha! Three students agreed to share their musical talents with their classmates when Darel organised an international music session on 3rd November. Aleš and Rafa rocked the audience with their singing talents while Carolina enchanted us with her fiddle playing.

Aleš from the Czech Republic has been performing in a student band as a background vocal singer over the last few years. The band practises regularly but Aleš has not ever had the opportunity to perform in public before. He performed a Russian and a Slovakian song for his fellow students. Aleš studied publishing and librarianship and is currently completing his work experience module.

Carolina from Colombia has been playing the violin for fourteen years, and started playing Irish traditional music four years ago. She has been performing in a 5-people band in Colombia, playing for over four hundred people in some concerts! Her passion for Irish music brought her to Carolina, USA where she attended a fiddle camp. She came to Alpha to study English in May 2006 and in September 2007 Carolina will do a Masters in Irish Traditional Music Performance in Limerick University. In the meantime, she continues taking English classes in Alpha and practising her fiddle technique in Devitt’s pub, Camden Street, where she plays every Friday night with a traditional Irish group.

Rafa has been singing in a 10-people band in Spain for about five years. As far back as he can remember he has always been surrounded by music. Some members of his family are full-time singers in Spain. Rafa tours around Spain with his band every summer during the ferias. The band performs famous songs and music for all tastes: Local Folk, Rock or even Paso Doble!  One of the hit songs Rafa performed was New York New York by Frank Sinatra.

College News

On Tuesday a group of Alpha College students got dressed up in the traditional Irish Green for St Patrick's Day and painted their faces with the Irish flag to go and watch the world famous parade here in Dublin.  Liam wore his unique Patrick's day tshirt and brought everyone to the pub for a proper pint of Guinness after the parade!

Have a look at our gallery of photos and if you have any more that you took on the day send them into us!

Testimony from Lisa Hoher, a German student at Alpha College of English.
