The BBC has announced their project to adapt Andrea Levy's famous novel Small Island for TV.
The two 90min episodes will cast Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean), David Oyelowo (The Last King of Scotland), Ruth Wilson (Jane Eyre), Benedict Cumberbatch (Starter For Ten) and Nikki Amuka-Bird (The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency).
While the plot unfolds in 1948 London, parts of the exterieur scenes will be shot on North Great George's Street. Our street is indeed one of the last preserved Georgian streets in Dublin. Set in a time when signs would read "No Irish, no couloureds, no dogs", the TV drama will follow Hortense, a 32 year old Jamaican woman recently arrived in London to start a new life with husband Gilbert.
"Having studied at private school, Hortense is looking forward to putting her teaching qualification to good use in the enlightenment of English children. When she finally joins her husband she is shocked to discover that London is not quite the place she imagined. "
Filming will start around February 2009 and the drama will be broadcast in autumn 2009.
