Anyone but Bono… (Part Two)

Stephen ShorttAbout Dublin & Ireland, Blog, Culture

This is part two of my blog series about Irish bands and Irish singers.  The last blog post we looked at some of the modern legends of Irish music (other than U2).  This post we are looking at the newest superstars that are taking the world by storm.  Don’t forget there is a YouTube playlist that accompanies this series.

My favourite artist at the moment is the latest sensation in music not just in Ireland but across the world.  This 24 year old artist who was born on St. Patrick’s Day has an amazing voice and a superb talent for writing music.  Hozier was recently nominated for a Grammy and he played his hit “Take me to the Church” with Annie Lennox at this year’s awards ceremony.  He is definitely one to watch.

James Vincent McMorrow

James is a singer song-writer from Waterford.  He has received a great response from the US and Europe for his debut album released in 2010.  His second album was released last year including the song “Glacier” which was used in the Spanish Lottery Campaign.

The Strypes

The four-piece band made their debut at a primary school Christmas Concert and their success has rapidly increased to the band playing on the Letterman Show in 2014. Their music has caught the attention of some music legends such as Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher and Dave Grohl who all declared themselves fans.  Great work for lads who haven’t reached 20 years of age!

There you go, three amazing Irish singers and bands to watch out for this year. Have you heard of any of them before? Is their music being played in your city at the moment?
